Avoiding demurrage and detention at Karachi Port
6 min read · By Lonesons Enterprises, Sialkot & Karachi · Updated October 2026
Demurrage and detention are two of the most avoidable costs in importing, and they are easy to confuse.
The difference
Demurrage is a charge when a container stays inside the port beyond its free days. Detention is a charge by the shipping line when you keep the container outside the port beyond its free days. Free time varies by line and contract, so check your bill of lading terms.
Common causes of delay
- Documents arriving after the cargo.
- GD not filed, or queries on classification and valuation.
- Duty payment funds not ready.
- Missing permits or certificates.
- No transport arranged for gate-out, or late return of the empty container.
How to stay ahead
- Send documents to your customs agent before the vessel arrives.
- Where permitted, file the GD early so assessment starts sooner.
- Keep duty and tax funds ready.
- Book transport in advance and know the empty return deadline.
- Track the vessel ETA and ask your agent for status at each stage.
